India would actually be a great country to base a region on. It has mountains, deserts, wetlands, beaches, coastline, plains, forests, large cities and a volcano. The wildlife is also pretty diverse and the mythology has some interesting concepts for Pokemon designs. Also there's a decent range of architecture (Indian, Persian, British, French and Portuguese). It's certainly more interesting than France or the USA.
