Platinum, HGSS and BW2 are all roughly the best with different weakness and strengths making a favorite up to personal preference. If USUM winds up in that same category (which it certainly won't surpass as long as we have 3 or less 'mon leaders/captains, no postgame area, no new Alola forms, no map changes & additions, no challenge mode from the start and without significant story differences) then it'll be as good as I expected.

When these games were announced I was so confident this would be the go-to for added content, but after all this silence I'd honestly be surprised. Why would they not have teased this shit already, so close to release?

Would not be surprised. The franchise has been a fairly linear increase in quality, discounting the sharp dip around gen 4.

If they'd had Morimoto do them I'd already be assuming that's true. But they didn't. Unlikely a newer random will do better than someone whose been around the entire series.
