I didn't bother with Geodude, but the games encourage you to experiment and try out all sorts of mons. Most games teach you how to get a grasp of type advantages by including an in-game trade before the first gym match. RS tries to get you to use a fighting type before Roxanne with the Makuhita trade, XY has Farfetch'd as the first trade, and an NPC in BW2 explicitly says he was able to beat Roxie by using a Magnemite nearby. There's also the obvious major trainers/gym guides telling you that a certain type is a good counter. If the games weren't designed around this, none of these recommendations and trades wouldn't exist. Getting upset at this is a silly, as the games have this in mind, and allow players to go through the game however they want, so those who would rather go with what they're familiar with can do that too.
