Do you only play Pokémon games and consume no other media? Even by video game standards SM's story wasn't very good. Like fuck, play some Final Fantasy games, their stories are schlocky and melodramatic but they're miles better than Pokémon's.

Like I said it's not great, it's just miles better than Pokémon. Final Fantasy sometimes succeeds at having narrative weight, something Pokémon has never done. Characters are allowed to die, you're often restricted and disallowed to go back to older locations for a while (something Pokémon would never do barring the first game locking you out of the area before Cerulean for a short period of time), and the world can change heavily over the course of a game, with even the entirety of the layout changing in some games like Final Fantasy 5 and 6 after certain plot points.
If you're going to play an RPG for its narrative almost anything is better than Pokémon, is the main point I want to make. FF was just an example.
