Do people actually like trials over traditional gyms?

I can see why people might prefer Trials. They're more steeped in a region's culture than Gyms are, they're something new, and Totems can be pretty fun to fight against.

I still prefer Gyms, though. They feel more official and organized, and Trials in practice are just watered-down Gyms.

Most of the totem battles were far more challenging than gyms. I legit got my ass handed to me on that Salazzle fight.

considering that trials were suppose to be added very late in the game, to the point that they had to reuse assets for them, i'm really interested in what they can do now that they actually have more time to put into them.
Though, in a perfect pokemon game, they would mix both gyms and trials, so you would start the game, do two trials and then do a gym, and then go to the kahuna, making the adventure more varied

Gym puzzles vary a lot in quality, I rather no puzzle than Lt. Surge's for example, and some gyms don't even have them but still right for most cases I think.

They should just be hard challenges and quests but for pokemon. Have them work with all the mechanics of the game and be genuinely challenging, instead of "press the A button 3 times".

Trials were basically the same as gyms except they had shittier puzzles. Totem battles were cool although that's mainly because they basically had a free stat boost at the start of the battle.

What I would like if they combine both into the main story.
First you get introduced to gyms then before challenging the second you have to defeat one or two trials and keep doing that till the elite four or something like that.

The real question is how they're ever going to bring back gym battles when the totems are objectively superior.

I usually know beforehand what team I want to use unless I'm doing a (blind)nuzlocke, so I don't use a full team until I am able to obtain all 6 members of my planned team in their respective parts of the game. I usually have 2-3 pokemon for the 1st few gyms/trials (depending on the game obviously)

Totems are indeed superior to gym battles, but the good thing is that totems are the easier thing to carry over to future generations. All they need to do is make it a test for every trainer to beat a boss pokemon before being able to challenge the gym. I mean, they already have 7 totems, they'd just need to add an 8th one for 8 gyms and 8 gym leaders.
All in all, there are ways to not axe the existence of totem pokemon, even if they're confined to wild unrelated things such as hidden grottos and the like

I'm going to give my opinion on this, apparently for people here totems were not challenging, for some it was. I'm gonna say to me it wasn't more or less challenging than were Gyms in previous games overall. But I really like the fact that GF went out of their comfort zone to bring something new to the franchise. I support that 100% and I really did like the concept of Totems and hope to see more. I do also have to agree that a mix between both concepts (gyms and trials) could also be a very great idea.
