Why was Red drawn like a tokyo ghoul character before SM by the fans?

Because he's a blank slate. Edgy people project edgy characters on their art of a blank slate.

Is it any surprise people wouldn't make those connections? And it was the early 2000s as well. Edgy characters were all the rage back then. It only got worse when Gamefreak gave us his HGSS sprite, which closely matched those artworks.


I'm happy SM effectively killed that version of the character in people's minds. Although the fujos found something else to latch onto.

Hilbert is literally blue-Red, though. He even disappears from his region and contacts no one for years. Just a bit more destiny was involved with him than with Red.

It's still got a bit of bounce that Red's doesn't, and both eyes are visibly facing the player so it gives off more of a "I'm ready for a fair, fun fight" than Red's "You're here to challenge me?" look. At least that's how I see it.
