Almost all of these can be done Gen 1 to Gen 2 and be apt. There was a different design philosophy from the original manga idea that got made into Gen 1 and Pokemon as a series.
Pikachu's look changed in yellow.

Pidgey vs Hoothoot
Hitmonchan vs top.
Growlithe vs Houndour
Flareon vs Umbreon
