The Pikachu/Gyarados battle might be Misty's first actual really good battle in her entire run. Outside of maybe the Cerulean Gym for nostalgia, I kinda realized I never really liked watching Misty's battles in the anime, even the ones without Psyduck ruining them.

It took till 2017 for Misty to actually have her first good battle in the series....for a character introduced back in 1997. 20 years

One good thing about the SM characters coming to Kanto is it'll inevitable take screentime away from Misty/Brock simply by them getting scenes or dialogue. There's only so much you can fit into a 22 minute episode. Had this just been an original trio reunion it really would have been some pandering nostalgia-fest to genwunners who quit watching 15 years ago

In all seriousness my worst fear back when AG was airing was that Misty would return and May would leave. Then all the Misty fans who quit watching and hated May would all come back after she left and they brought Misty back. A lot used to compare the Misty/May switch to the Brock/Tracey one in Orange Islands. I was scared shitless something like that would happen after Hoenn ended for Battle Frontier, or for DP before they revealed Dawn's anime pic for the first time. If you guys saw all those rabid Misty fans who bashed May for years, you'll understand why I have such resentment for them.

Well I liked the show in Kanto from the start obviously as that's when most of us got into it. I started to get bored around the early portions of Johto but stuck with it anyway because I was a kid at the time.

I got into it more around the time Hoenn started and watched more or less consistently from there. I did stop watching regularly early into BW, but watched some scattered important eps here and there,

For me it was that those moments were rare and felt tacked on (i liked those moments tho.), him being obnoxiously positive without any slightest irony by narrative and that he had the most generic dialogue in xy by saying mostly the same generic quip to other character without any personalized feel to it (you can apply his robotic sentences to alm. every situation)

this made interactions with other character very lacking bc. he was too bland in interacting and could almost never react to people and their quirks and personality accordingly in any way (this was why him and serena had the least developed friendship imo. bc. it was more serena being put too much emphasis on her roman. feels and blushing and ash being motivational in such a generic way where he said nearly always the same quip or being oblivious to her)

you can be mature, the way xy ash was written weird, where it would help his character if he had more rounded out chara, more self awareness and less bland dialogue which at least the other ash incarnations had to varying degrees even with maturity.

i like xy but this was very shitty to me and the reason i prefer sm ash bc. he is more rounded out in chara by showing quirks and strengths in everyday life, having more selfawareness in personality, being mature and insightful when it matters and more personalized and enjoyable interactions with others including being not taken overseriously etc. though yes he can be too overenthusiastic sometimes and his design is off for some reason too at times but not always (even tho. the artstyle is merely a more simplified xy style) but i still like him and sm for its more character driven and lighthearted focus alongside its serious moments.

and yes its a opinion and sm isnt objectively bad or xy for that matter, it all depends on what you like (even if people like saying sm is bad thats not true bc. according to that logic. xy is bad too or any series.

This sums up why i dislike xy and xyz. Everything that anon said is on point. XY ash completely felt out of character for ash himself he was way to monotone while other incarnations had variety with his travel companions acting accordingly to it. Be honest did serena interact with ash in any other way but to stare and blush? No she didn't. All the other girls had loads of variety in interactions ranging from fighting with ash(arguments) to having sweet silly heart warming moments all over the seasons they appeared in. Every pokegirl even battled with or against ash serena only had one friendly battle the whole xy xyz life span.
