Ironically he was still reasonably competent in OS and much more so than Gary, despite the meme. Gary got knocked out of the Indigo Plateau very early, and Ash continued onwards until a combination of Team Rocket interfering before a round and bullshit rules ended his first League challenge, which he then got blamed for by his friends.

Seriously the rules in that match were bullshit. 3v3, no switching out, asleep counts as KO'd, if a mon stops fighting but can still fight it's counted as a KO. What is this, dogfighting rules?

The prophecy stuff stands out because it's a major part of the story, makes everyone marvel at how special he and his Pokemon are. It's cliche and overused, yeah, but it's still ridiculous. Everyone gets special forms to show how strong they are, and now he gets a super special form to show how special and unique he is, even though its origins are barely explored upon. The fact that it's cliche downplays the seriousness for fans, but the intent is there: they wanted to glorify Ash to a ridiculous degree.
