Maybe there's a chace for an event in USUM to be related to it? They're the last games for the 3DS, and final console games typically have a lot of content and events. Gold/Silver, Crystal, Emerald and B2W2 all share this fact.

GameFreak saw that the 20th anniversary was coming up needed to make a new Gen and gave up on making Z and lied to fans about Z not being planned.
That's why there were only 48 megas, with Ash Greninja and Zygarde complete being introduced in Gen 7, why Z moves have Z in their name and just being Mega Moves, why Kalos was to empty, and why the Gen 6.5 leaked dex is so similar to the Gen 7 dex.

The Z is fairly established to stand for "zenryoku" (fully powered) in Japanese marketing. It's just that international marketers couldn't figure out anything starting with a Z to translate it into, so the connection kinda got lost.
