If Yanmega, it really is just because the Japanese don't care about the western name of the insect it's based on. Why would they?

If Flygon, I never understood why it's not Dragon/Bug. I get it's an antlion, not a dragonfly... but they already gave it the DRAGON typing so that's irrelevant. The type they DIDN'T give it is Bug, which it very much IS based on. The only thing that would make sense is if the idea is that it's a lizard that resembles an insect but isn't one, but nothing ever mentions this idea and Vibrava specifically is very, very insect-like.

Because of temperament. Houndoom doesn't look very aggressive to me, and mostly just looks like a horned doberman or rottweiler. Luxray looks savage and vicious, and its eyes make it look almost psychotic.
