For the Ashnime, it was basically a perfectly executed subplot with a big payoff at the end. After years of moments, spaghetti, and worrying, we get a decent conclusion to an actual romantic subplot. To like XY is to like Amour, even a little bit, so that connection is probably a huge part of it.

It is cute (really, really cute) and was well-executed. The format of the show wouldn't ever allow an actual relationship to start, but the kiss was cathartic enough so they must have done something right. The in-universe excuse of Serena basically growing a spine and deciding to be better instead of just following Ash around (while still liking him) even worked.

I also like very much how well dosed it was. The anime never became a soap opera because of Serena's crush, there was basically no angst about it and while it had the spotlight here and there it never dominated the whole show.

It could work by having them just act natural towards each other, maybe some of the SM girls noticing her attachment to Ash, and in the end give them a moment walking by themselves by the beach, without explicitly showing anything, just leaving it implied. I'd hate it if it was very loud about it.

Or get Serena in one of those last episode cameos in which she comes to visit Ash but discovers he has just left for whatever the gen 8 region is and has adventures with Lillie/Mallow/whoever.
