Animation student here. I personally prefer the newer SM style of animation because it really does feel way much expressive, but what I think most people are actually pissed off about is its blatant disregard for adherence of volumes. Exaggeration, especially in squash and stretch, is a key part in acting, but I feel that SM's style overdid it. See, you *can* distort volumes, but it must be done convincingly; when you extend a volume, the other end of it must shrink proportionally. SM feels like it just got a new toy to play with and recklessly abuse it. Good on them to experiment but experimentation must be done with purpose and finesse.

I remember how the first time we saw the trailer, I could see they were going for a more expressive style but something was off- and even now, sometimes the drawings can look a little flat and with no sense of volume.
