Dawn's contests were just as interesting as Ash's gym battles, and she actually earned her victories instead of bullshitting her way through contests like May did with Assist and Metronome.

I don't really even know who contests are meant to appeal to
I feel like it's a really generic attempt at appealing to girls, since it's got cute Pokémon dancing with cute girls wearing dresses
But I'm pretty sure most girls would still rather an episode be not shit

Pretty much just there to give the female companion something to do since gym battles/league is already taken by Ash. It prevents them from becoming walking scenery like Misty did in Johto.
