Valid points across the board. However, the point of Pokemon isn't exploration, but the journey you take with Pokemon. It's about the Polish, not the freedom. You're given a memorable objective, to keep some kind of experience left in the game. If you want nonlinearity, that's fine. But gen 1 didn't have nonlinearity; it had 0 polish and basically said "fuck you, you're on your own". In terms of experience, they didn't do jack shit. Your Adventure is what you make it; not what you want it to be.

Pokemon sun and moon have a lot of issues, but the cutscenes were there to give a more cinematic experience, which I generally loved. The cutscene to get your starter was abysmal, but only when you're experiencing it more than once. it's there to offer a connection with you and your Pokemon, and to make it more personalized for you. The cutscenes weren't even the worst part of the game.

The environments were the same copypasted 4 things over and over again. If you explored, you didn't get a reward. No rare Pokemon, no Z stones in most cases, and no story element or progression.

The lack of a story in old games only gave an illusion of freedom anyway. The fact that you can so things in a different order doesn't change much, the game still forces you to beat the gyms and Elite 4 because that's all there is TO do. And it's even worse because the game gives no narrative or motive, so there's really no reason to even bother because the gyms are the least exciting part of the game.

they're a little more intent on handholding now, that much is true; but the fact is that thanks to all the graphical upgrades and better attempts at actual writing, very little is left purely to the imagination like in the old games. gamefreak is doing the exact same amount of work instead of doing more to be able to pull this off, and that's why the games are more noticeably shit.

This is pretty true still. Average player struggles because they aren't taught that some natures are better on certain Pokemon along with certain moves (you wouldn't put physical moves on a Magnezone).
Granted, you don't have to go into the games knowing any of these things, but it does make you a better player.
