Zubat is fine. But it's usually the most common Pokemon in caves, so it's basically the icon for unwanted, unnecessary random encounters

You know, Pokemon dungeons really aren't that good. Sure they're better than a straight line, or nothing in the case of Vela, but they're nothing great by RPG standards. Almost none of the puzzles are particularly interesting. The level design is rarely complex enough that just figuring out where to go is particularly interesting. And random encounters are more of a tedious pain in the ass than pretty much any other JRPG, you get very little from fighting them, and you can easily ignore them with Repels. Actually if they could somehow fix just the random encounters then even the Gen I and II era dungeon design would probably be good enough, but...

I think they need to find a better balance. Pokemon can and should have plot and story. Gen 1 was my least favorite because it felt pointless with no plot. As a character your adventure isn't interesting, you're just doing stuff because the game itself wants you to, not because characters you can care about want you to. Gen 5 solved this the best with a more consistently present plot, that still wasn't overly intrusive like Gen 7. I hope we get more games like Gen 5.
