This is concept art for Red++ 3.0. It won't be out any time soon, but the pokered-gbc changes are being merged in so that this sort of sprite work will be possible.

Really any GBC hack could so something like this. The key features are having space for lots of tiles (here's a tutorial for 240 <https://hax.iimarckus.org/topic/7167/>, Polished Crystal now has 247, and Red++ 3.0 plans to have 256), and editing the palettes (just change tilesets/bg.pal in pokecrystal). And good art design, of course, but plenty of free tilesets exist. Just don't be limited by the default ones you see in crowdmap.

Right, but not everyone bothers to give it anything besides the default pokecrystal metatiles. As far as I know there's no GUI editor for tilesets yet, crowdmap only edits the maps themselves, so it's less beginner-friendly.

Fuck, I was actually a bit excited to try out Pokémon XY: Naturia Version, the Gold hack, until I realized it didn't have a devamped, or at least partially devamped, Kalos. It's just Johto with Calem and Serena as protags, some of the GSC "beta maps" with some new tiles, and a modded dex, as well as basic stat/move changes. That's a bit disappointing.

If anyone's played it, can you tell me if I'm missing/overlooking something?

The NPC could have dialog like "......" to prevent crashing if the player cheats their way to them. Avoid calling the Player out as a cheater, since it'd break immersion. But also don't reward them with additional dialog.

The final hallway would be a dark room with flat walls, requiring Flash to see.
It should be long enough to make the Player question it, but not long enough to be annoying (maybe a good 30-45 seconds of walking?).
You could have the room be entered through a hole in the previous floor so the Player can't go back, adding to the "spooky" atmosphere.

Somewhere along the walls in the final hallway could be a strength rock or a small lake that the Player would only see if they came back with Flash.
Past that could be a Ghost-related item like a Spell Tag, or even a battle with the aforementioned NPC, who would really be a high-leveled Ghost Pokemon with a special ability or moveset that would make them worth catching (Gengar with Prankster or Shadow Tag, and moves like Mimic or Role Play).

You might want to try composing a song similar to the Burnt Mansion theme, where the countermelody isn't exactly four bars before it loops so it de-syncs with the rest of the song and thus sounds relatively random even though it isn't.

That's what happens when you try to make a 721 hack in a game with no new wild Pokemon in the postgame. It was either put the legendaries in stupid places or leave them out of the game entirely, so most of them wound up jammed into hordes in late game areas. That pic isn't even the worst example, there are hordes of things like the weather trio in Victory Road.
The encounter rates for those hordes are pretty low, though, so most people probably won't see them unless they go looking for them.

Cool idea! Some things to pay attention to:
• Some trainers face left or right and can see N tiles ahead. Make sure that none of them can notice you from offscreen.
• If you shift the screen over by 8px, the side columns of tiles will be cut in half. Check what happens to NPCs standing there. It might be weird.
• Walk on the leftmost edge of maps and make sure their border block doesn't bleed through in odd places. (A canon example: walking into Cerulean Cave, the border block of trees bleeds through at the top of the screen.)

If you take the time to maintain the atmosphere even in these situations, it can really go a long way to combat "cringey" writing.
Imagine if the player somehow managed to get to that area without cheating, due to an oversight in your map design. The atmosphere would fall apart immediately if they talked to an NPC and read something like "haha fuk u cheater nub xDD".
Hell, even if someone DID have to cheat to encounter the dialog, hearing about it secondhand would be a turn off for me, because I'd expect that kind of thing all over the game.

Meanwhile, a fittingly stoic "........" would maintain, and maybe even reinforce the player's immersion if they were cheating. Knowing that the developer almost expected you to read it, that's the kind of thing you'd find in "easter egg" sections of gaming magazines and on tcrf for official games.

The tile you place the warp on has to have specific properties. Take a look at one of the vanilla caves, the tile by the exit will look exactly the same as all the other floor tiles, but will show up as a separate tile in the list on the side. Make sure you're using that tile and it should work.

Well that's the problem. Aside from the map tileset, the warp to exit the cave has all the exact same properties as the vanilla warps. But for whatever reason it still won't allow me to exit. I even tried changing the tileset and manually changing the block's behavior byte.

Okay, I was actually going to use it for plot purpose. The rival goes around the region hitting all the local Poke-Marts, stealing their X-Items for his father. The player ocassionally teams up with the Police Force for their investigation of the thefts being committed. The rival's father plans to create an all-powerful X-Item by coalescing the 5 X-Items, mass-producing it, then selling it to mafia bosses and other region leaders, potentially motivating war, either civil or world-wide, for enormous profit. The player ends up cornering the scientist atop his R&D tower after destroying his medicine churns, although it turns out he succeeded in producing a completely working prototype dubbed, X-All. He then uses it on his ace Pokemon (I was thinking Tyrantrum)

This is done right before facing the E4. Or maybe after. Either way, pretty much near the end of the game. It's a one-time thing item

Honestly, it's not even the plot I'm going to be using for the game I'm working on. This is just an all-on-paper idea. But It'll be a while since I will work on a next game to use this plot, so if you guys want to incorporate this into your own games, go nuts.
