Lycanroc is a halfway point between it's two existing forms. SM anime is an art style choice and Game Freak isn't even responsible for it. You'll find nitpicks like OP in any game boy game.

To be fair SM gave the old pokémon included in the regional dex new entries, unlike XY. They also ave every separate form and Mega included in the regional dex their own independent entries, which only Hoopa-U had previously.

You cannot excuse Lycanroc Dusk from being lazy, there are other ways to make intermediate forms than to literally copy-paste an old form and give it an extra tuft of hair. Also, you cannot use BW2 as an argument in USM's case because USM aren't sequels. I don't mind more fish pokémon at all, but I don't get this complaint. Gen V didn't have particularly few new fish lines compared to most other generations. It had 3 lines, the Basculin twins, Alomomola and the Tynamo line.
Sinnoh for example had only one new fish line, that being the Finneon line, and they added Mantyke as a prevo I suppose.

I'm using fish as a blanket for water-dwelling, I'm including squids, jellyfish, seals and what-have-you in there.
The problem with Unova isn't really that they didn't add many "fishes" to the common pool, there were already too many of those, but that BW relied exclusively on new pokémon to populate its region. That meant we had only four lines populating its rivers and seas (one of them, basculin, being rushed in at the end because they realized their mistake too late). Scarcity was even worse off than Kanto.

There's probably a causal relationship between this scarcity and the fishing rod being obtainable only in the post-game, where the Unova-only rule is discarded.
Whether 'the rod is obtained late because there are few fishes' or 'few fishes being designed because the rod was obtained late' I can't really guess.

Really I would have preferred Unova's take on horsea or psyduck over that pseudo-starter monkey trio. No wonder one of them was the least popular pokémon veer in that poll.

Let me spell it out to you and anybody else who believes this design is lazy:

When Venusaur Mega Evolves, the energy goes into its flower and foliage. The flower eventually elongates and matures. Eventually the flower releases seeds and pollen on Venusaur's head and butt, which result in immature flowers on each part.

As the flower grows, the surrounding foliage does as well, lifting it off of Venusaur's back. But not all the foliage was removed. The upper foliage layer blocks sunlight away from the lower layer, which makes that layer noticeably darker. Venusaur also grows some foliage spots on its head and vines on its back.
