What do you think of having South Korea as a basis for a region?
>>
Are we talking before or after Kim Jong Un turns the place into an irradiated wasteland?
>>
>>33434750
No idea. I know little of the georgraphy or animal life or Korean but would like to learn.
Literally all I have to go on is maybe having women in the more traditional areas wear hanboks.
Maybe have some pachirisu around due to the Korean champ a year or few back if not outright having a mega or regional variant.
>>
>>33434750
that'd be cool

there's a bunch of cool cultural and mythical things they could turn into Pokemon
>>

Somebody post that /x/ collage and the Jangsan Tiger Fakemon.

>Jangsan Tiger

https://redsnest.wordpress.com/2016/08/30/south-korean-urban-legend-the-jangsan-tiger/

>The Jangsan Tiger has two rows of fine, sharp teeth and beautiful white fur covers the creature’s entire body. Its posture is like that of a crouching tiger or a large hunting dog. It is very swift and travels through mountains with incredibly ease. It is said to be a man-eater, and makes a sound like a woman’s wail or a stream of water to lure people.

fucking nice

How likely would GF base their future region off of South Korea?

Ask the guy making the North Korea region hack in /heg/.

As for official, it'd be cool. I wonder if they'd just ignore North Korea (like how Kalos ignores southern France), or if they'd troll and just reunite the Koreas.
>>
>>33434993
In most cases I would say unlikely given Japan and Korea's long-standing hatred of each other.
That said Pokemon is a huge brand designed to appeal to many and the same can be said of Nintendo. Pokemon is popular enough in Korea so I think that increases the chances some. My question is how much influence the art team has over what region is picked. I think a lot personally since I think the higher ups care fuck all about where the region as based so long as they have pokemon games that sell. I know dick about business though. To me it really is down to what influences GameFreak next. If Masuda and or one of the Jap artists takes a vacation in Korea or randomly visits it and likes it that probably means we would get a Korean region next. Otherwise who knows. I thought that would have made another Japan region now. After two in the west I would have thought they would want to bring it home but out came Alola to prove me wrong.
>>
>>33435076
In a perfect world they would acknowledge it and even incorporate the rivalry between the two Koreas into the storyline. Of course, everything would end with them putting their differences aside sue to the actions of the protagonist, since it's a family friendly game.
>>
>>33435845
>North worships one box cover legendary
>South worships the other
>The towns in each area are designed in theme with the legendary (example: North worships a Steel/Electric legendary and have modern looking cities and western clothes, South worships a Ghost/Fairy legendary and have traditional style homes and traditional clothes)
>Both sides hate each other, blame the other of worshiping an evil Pokémon and being jerks in general
>There are also an evil team in each area that further ignite the hatred
>Big "twist" in the end is that both teams are actually one team that harvest the negative energy or whatever to awaken the actually evil third legendary
>The two box legendaries are actually friends\siblings\lovers\whatever
>Protag defeats the evil team leader and brings harmony to the region
>League and post game are in fusion style towns

Cliché as fuck but I would love it
>>
>>33436095
Also, by worship I don't necessarily mean in a religious sense, it can even be simply like

>We in the North learned from the powerful [Pokémon] to let go of our past and strive to the future! But those dumb fools in the South were tricked by [Pokémon] and cling to their silly superstitions!

>We in the south learned from the legends of [Pokémon] to hold on to our traditions and reject false progress! But those uncultured fools in the North were tricked by [Pokémon] to forget their ways of life!
>>
No more gook shit.

We need an Africa region ASAP.
>>
WE
>>
>>33436095
South is much more advanced than NK and NKs think their leader is a god. Swap them
>>
>>33436095
Actually, North is generally more traditional (or pretends to be), their ideology being more similar to that of German National Socialism or Japanese Imperialist jingoism. South would be more modernist and probably more globalist. It ought to be more complex than one is bad and the other is good. I guess to some in surface the south looks like good guy but there is also evil while north believes in something that they think is best for the world but looks evil by the general populace. I think that would have some interesting implications should a game like that be made. As a Korean I want my old monarchy and a united Korea back
>>
>>33438469
>>33438396
But the North being the modern side allows them to have a soviet-eqsue aesthetic without actually making them evil or communist.

Here is a general plot idea:
>Protagonist is a visitor from another region
>Region isn't outright at war or anything, but the two sides just hate each other, further egged on by the "two" evil teams
>They refuse to have a single league, so they split up
>The North has a regular league, but you only need 5 badges because they are smaller
>The South has a more traditional league, with something like Alolan trials instead of gyms, that give you 5 charms
>Conviently enough, the 5th gym and 5th trial are in the same city near the center, and each is led by the leaders of the evil team
>WHOA WHAT A TWEEST! There is no 5th gym/trial! It's a trick by the true head of the evil team to awaken the evil third legendary!
>Protagonist and main NPCs from both side awaken the two box legendaries with a traditional ritual, and free them from the control of the evil legendary with modern tech
>Protag stops the bad guy and captures the designated legendary
>"Protagonist, you showed us that our feud was foolish. We can each believe in what we want while also learning from others and living in harmony! Now that you have 8 badges and charms, we should honor you and celebrate our new unity by rebuilding our old unified league!"

>Neither area has HMs, South had riding Pokémon like Alola and North has designated high-tech items
>You can only used ridemons in the south and tech items in the north until the postgame, blocking off areas until then
>>
>>33438555
Why not just simplify things and have the North be taken over by the evil team?
Even going so far as only having 7 Gyms in the south... and routing the evil team is what must be done before the 8th Gym opens up.

Can even have surprise fun that the 8th Gym Leader is the Great Leader of the evil team.
>>
>>33438555
Aside from possibly some areas in Jeolla-do (considered black sheep of the peninsula), there is nothing traditional about modern South Korea. My people have all but abandoned it and eschewed it for modernist filth. There are occasions they may have traditional celebrations, but they are not as pure nationalistic as either Japan or their northern counterparts, so I really don't know. They're very American in some ways.

However, the fat man of the North is "modernising" the North too, so it is a bit of a far cry from Kim Il Sung's era, despite his appearance making him look like his grandfather. North could be maverick and refuse to join in the modern counterpart of a world League authority, or whatever, and bring out tensions, trying to restore "old order of their own nation", while South tries something new and progressive, would seem more akin to struggle of real life Korea in some ways. Of course if this is just "based off Korea" but not really representing them, you can really do whatever. I will give you this: when Japan took over Korea, they planned on the northern half of being more industrial, and the southern half more agricultural. Nowadays, north is more militaristic in society, south is more economically rich (not counting the many small towns that are in the lower part of the wealth gap).

Jeju-do like area could be a nice idea for a postgame area, and it has a slight blend of Oceania culture in it as well, interestingly enough.
>>
>>33438730
And that makes me think, a charismatic villain leader could definitely be the northern villain, north being completely taken over by him, and people believe him to be genuine. Remember BW's N and Ghetsis, something akin to that, denouncing the "evil ways" of the southern half, but his intentions are not pure and like the actual leaders of the North, does not believe in their own propaganda they spew out. The protagonist comes from the south. He could be taking the league challenge in south or something. But that makes me wonder what could be the "dominant team" of the south. I have not thought of that.

There is also a phrase 남남북녀, which means go to south for men, go to north for women. A girl character who espouses hardcore tradition from north and a modern guy character from south? Girl is a spy from North, who actually has ties to the evil team. Now how to tie in the "box legendary", I have not thought of it. North has Baekdusan, a volcanic mountain which they believe has divine origins, a perfect setting for a legendary honestly. South, I am unsure if there is anything considered as sacred. But a third can be from the Jejudo counterpart, I guess, and there is a Hallasan, another volcano, in the centre of that island.
>>
>>33438578
I feel like that's too meaningless. My idea is that like how recent regions have emotional themes, this one's will be unity. Yeah, it's a ''power of friendship beats fantasy racism'' cliché, but I think a plot like this done without any trace of sarcasm could be really nice.

>>33438730
Meh, you can swap the two areas, or even subtly avoid the politics and make it East and West.
>>
>>33438778
Forgot to mention Baekdusan has a lake in the middle called 천지 天池 Cheonji (Heaven's Lake). Chinese call it Tianchi. Incidentally there is a monster there according to some sightings. Think Loch Ness and other cryptoids. Themes like heaven, water, fire (volcano), earth (mountain)... I don't know exactly what kind of aspects this type of legendary would have though.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Tianchi_Monster
>>
>>33438795
Flip the map like Hoenn and people will not suspect a thing. It might work, but I was just thinking if it actually somewhat reflected Korean geopolitical map it would look a little more like what I said.
>>
>>33438778
I think the whole spies and tyrants and war plot is a bit too adult for a pokémin game. I imagine the region still technically being a single ''nation'', but the population is getting more and more divided and hateful.
>>
I prefer Hyper Autism's ideas to the onse posted in this thread, really.
>>
>>33438817
Probably. It could be toned down so it could be about unity of both sides of one nation (I do consider it one nation still, just ran by two illegitimate governments), found by a unifying legendary or something. We still sing the same Arirang (a sacred song to both North and South, but its real meaning still mystifies us). There can still be a character who is an insider to the villain team, something akin to Lillie or something. The villain team wants the power to themselves (or at least the leader, but the actual grunts have no idea and think they are doing good), or plot twist, both south and north evil teams are outwardly enemies but both are working together to "unify" but under both their rule with the legendary. I don't know. A lot of ideas are here and there, they just need to be refined, and still somewhat touch the Korean psyche, so that's why I was writing these things.
>>
>>33438853
I like the ideas that the grunts on both sides of the teams don't know the twist, only the leader, and maybe even the admins of each team end up helping the protagonist in the end, or become E4 members in the unified league.

What do you think of the region name Seonguk?
>>
>>33438929
Seon would mean a lot of things, whether fresh or first amongst others. In fact it is in the name JoSeon (a name our country used to bear, but now North Korea takes that name). Guk obviously means Nation, so it would be a very obvious name to what it refers to. It is a nice name and I do like it. Our country first... reunification when ㅠㅠ

We have similar heroes, like Yi Sun Shin, the naval captain who thwarted Japanese invasion, can be represented by a common hero both sides look up to in the game. A popular folktale is the founder of the country is a divine king named Dangun, so a lot of common origins could also appeal in some form, maybe a great dragon mon to represent it since this is a Pogeymanz game. Fear of foreigners imposing their rule or something does not even have to be present, I think, but that was one thing that crossed my mind.

I still have to wonder about the legendaries though. What could be minor legendaries, or if the "Cheonji monster" is the prime legendary and the southern half makes an artificial beast as a foil with counterpart stats, which could be cool, or take an old fossil mon and modify it with modern technology so it is still part of the "trio". I don't know. I could easily just suggest a four quadrant Azure Dragon, Black Tortoise, Vermilion Bird, and White Tiger, but I think that may suit China more.

In the end, it would be questionable that Gamefreak, a Japanese company, and a country Korea swore to hate due to history, would even think about making a Korea base region.
>>
>>33438974
Honestly I just mended Hanguk and Choseon in the way that sounded the most phonetically pleasing to my non-korean ears
>>
>>33439023
Ah ha. I see.

Seon in Joseon is this character: 鮮, which is made up of 魚 (fish) and 羊 (sheep), which is to say a fish and sheep will not harm each other. I guess "fresh" is not the right word, but more like pure, which actually North Korean propaganda believes: they are pure people.

Now if we play word games with unrelated English, Joseon looks too much like "Chosen" (don't follow the nose) and Seon sounds like Sun, which actually Kim Il Sung's name means "I became the sun". He is buried in a Palace of the Sun, and he is literally worshipped as a sun god. Which brings me to another idea. Since somebody was so enamoured with a modern North, here is one secret modern aspect. Genetically modified Pokemon akin to Mewtwo or Genesect from the North with solar powers could be the equivalent of the leader's secret scientists or an alternative scientist from that team working on a powerful Pokemon (Plasma making Genesect), or the leader wanting the most powerful Pokemon for himself (Giovanni and Rockets making Mewtwo). Hmmm... though unfortunately all the counterpart autists will go "where is my moon mon"?

What is the O requirement? Does every region have an O in it in English? Let me think....

By golly you are right. What does Eunja mean here? 은 could mean commonly silver, grace, 자 commonly means character, child, self, person. Just need some ideas as to how you came up with that name.

It's "hermit", as in the "Hermit Kingdom." I got it from an old Korean-to-English book.
>>
>>33439235
Oh you mean collectively (it was hidden in plain sight). That is true, it was called 은자의 왕국 in the past. I thought you were just putting two characters together as is common practice with naming things, but even the individually the characters would actually be unique to the name. I don't know, but it sounds so weird if this was actually Korean, because it would be akin to an English game naming their region "Hermit". To untrained ears of course it would just sound like Korean words to them so it would look cool. It is awkward to me though.

I know Chinese used strange names to describe old kingdoms. Transcribed to Korean though, Rome would be Dae Jin Guk (Great Jin Kingdom), Byzantine Empire would be Bul Leum, Russia would be Ro Suh Ah, things like that. Try something by combining different letters together so it sounds a little more exotic and less like a common word to Koreans.
>>
>>33439275
Though I should also warn you, some combinations will look like common names people name children. You seem to really want O in English. Okay then. Something with Dong (commonly means East or even winter), Oh (could mean Five commonly), Jeong (righteousness), Bom (spring as in season, but this is actual native Korean), Gong (fair, common, ball), Bong is part of BongHwang which is a pretty much an equivalent of a Phoenix in the orients, just to name a few.
>>
>>33439370
To be fair, Kalos was literally just the word "beauty" in Greek and Alola was just "aloha" with one letter changed.
>>
>>33439598
Kalos also means "good" but yeah it does mean "beautiful" too. I actually know some Koine Greek, so that was a pleasant surprise to me. And yeah Alola is kind of dumb too. In Korean they didn't put the ㄹ as a final consonant on the second syllable, so it looks more like Alora. Eunja though even to people who are not thinking would make it look like a profession, like -er suffix in English (i.e. banker, shopper) because the -ja acts like that precisely, so I was a little offset by that.

In Korean Unova is called Hana, which means One. That region creeped me out because of that. It is a little harder to make a shortened Korean word like you do with English to make fusion words like Unova, we normally do it with multiple words and take the first characters of each to make an abbreviation.

>>
Would the evil team in the South be the Government that's actually a cult?
That would be cool.
And also blasphemous to them, too.
>>
>>33442089
A cult evil team actually sounds interesting. Worshipping a legendary mon to bring an end or something? To further the region for harmony and peace (same thing they spit out in real life, which means weed out all who dissent)? Yet if you were to reflect real life, so is North with their KimIlSungism/KimJongIlism and KWPism. But as a Korean Christian I can confirm there are many crazy power tripping cults that run this country as well. Or feminists even. An idea is that they are at league with the Northern "enemies", but are both same side of one coin, while the grunts are unaware of the real evil they are led by. Maybe some of the admins are in it, but some (like a Saturn-like character) may eventually defect. Only problem is some other person is saying these are too adult for a Pokemon game. And of course, a lot of angry South Koreans going "this isn't Korea because we be perfect" kind of attitude when their problems are right under their noses but I digress.

You guys made me realise there is no shortage of ideas that can actually be used for a theoretical Korea-based region, so thanks for that.
>>
>>33439765
Yup.
>>
>>33434750
Would be cool, but we'd see China before we see anything Korea. Japan fucking hates Korea, almost more than Iranians hate the Jews. Seriously. It's to the point that the Japanese went back and started burying the parts of their cultural history that them back to Korean ancestry. They can't stand Korea.

My money is on the next region being another western country or region of the world. Seems to me there's lots more options there. Didn't the team recently go to San Francisco or am I imagining that? I remember they took a trip to NYC and a trip to France before those respective regions; maybe Hawaii as well?

Also, no order but my official list of neat places to create new regions:
>China (nearly unlimited lore potential, lots of fresh ideas for new Pokemon)
>India (similar to China above, but also feels way more exotic and could cover a lot of different environments)
>British Isles (Arthurian and Celtic legend, lots of medieval theming, vikings make sense to see here, could connect back to Kalos...)
>Greece ("antiquity" is a cool setting for a game, mediterranean climate could be fun to explore, could get into Greco-Roman mythology with legendaries)
>Australia (fuckton of cool Pokemon ideas)
>Northern Africa (blends the mediterranean with Egyptian, Ethiopian, and even Mideastern culture... lends to a very exotic feeling region with interesting ideas for Pokemon)
>Brazil (covers the South America angle many fans want, also the most populous and diverse country so an easy target for a region that could include some other Latin influences from the Andes, Argentina, Central America... also, Mayans and Incans... and the Amazon)
>Mexico (basically same idea as Brazil but with more of a centralizing theme, could get into Native American culture, all the cool Mexican holidays, Aztecs, a bit of Texas, the beach culture...)

>>
>>33442724
Did they do Okinawa yet? That could be cool.
>>
>>33442696
Yeah that's what I wrote before Japan and Korea don't like each other. Mostly Koreans to Japan, though there is a lot of cultural diffusions now so you see some of the people intermingling with each other without any hard feelings, but it is not always the case. But I think it is a theory thread at most, or someone can create a ROM hack/essentials I guess.
>>
>>33442812
But with that being said, the different regions you listed seem nice. Northern Africa is a historian's dream, and Australia and black swans for instance, like different variations of established mons (though we have that in Alola) sounds cool too. I always wanted a Britain too, but how pozzed was the France they released? And worst of all they will not go back to that region anymore after that incomplete state of a game got released!

I've actually given the British region more thought than the other ideas I've given (save Greece which I have a full dex for). Just think of some of these ideas:

>Merlin, Arthur, and Morgan legendaries
>Lady of the Lake mythical
>some badass Celtic monster legendary
>Knights of the Round NPCs
>Camelot, Avalon, Loch Ness, Hy-Brasil as mythical locations
>Traditional dragons
>Witches
>Tons of lore from Scotland, Wales, Ireland, and England
>evil team based on sorcerors
>London, Liverpool, Glasgow, Dublin, Cardiff, Manchester, Newcastle as major cities
>English Channel and North Sea as water routes
>Returning Pokemon could include a healthy mix of lesser seen mons from older gens (Mareep, Liepard, Druddigon, Sentret, Aron, Flabebe...)
>New mons could include a Dark/Psychic-line based on witches, Grass/Fairy shamrocks, goblins, pixies, banshees, fire belly toads, pine martins, minke whale, pipistrelle, moose, slowworms, damselflies, puffins...
>Starters: Grass/Fighting wallaby line, Fire/Ground stag line, and a Water/Bug garden snail line
>>
>>33443148
You have a full dex for Greece? That sounds great! I hope for a lot of maritime monsters and also mythological creatures, which would be cool. There is a lot of ideas for British Isles Pokemon, and you certainly did a lot of research on it. I actually had a microcosm version of Europe, which included a British Isle section, and the mons you listed like Mareep, Druddigon, Sentret, Aron, Flabebe, etc were all there as well. Not Liepard though, but I put things like Carbinks also. I don't remember I have to check. Especially Druddigon I felt was something British about it. Maybe Welsh. I have only been there once in my life along with London. So many sheep and nice hills there.

Knowing Gamefreak, they will replace the demographics of a UK region with a lot of Pakis and non indigenous people, and probably put unrelated Pokemon like Pangoro as wild, like they did in Kalos.

(yes same Korea anon that has been talking over here)
