A subjective, blanket statement like this is weak. Try again.

For the main stories, SM has better characters which helps make select parts of the story more digestible, but even BW Unova is a much better region. I'd really rather not replay either, though.

SM is in the post-XY world where legitimately getting good IVs and the like is actually viable though, and the Battle Tree lets you drop in and out as you wish, so I'd rather keep playing that than keep playing BW after the credits.

You are missing the whole point of BW1, which was to use new Pokemon. Numbers aren't everything.

Considering BW1 are unironically very good, I'd have to give it to SM.

Red and Green are better than Ruby and Sapphire.
Gold and Silver are better than Red and Green.
Ruby and Sapphire are better than Sun and Moon.
FireRed and LeafGreen are better than Ruby and Sapphire.
Diamond and Pearl are better than FireRed and LeafGreen.
HeartGold and SoulSilver are better than Gold and Silver.
Black and White are on par with FireRed and LeafGreen.
Sun and Moon are worse than Black and White.

Mechanically and in terms of hardware, Sun and Moon are technically the "best" games, but they take so many steps backwards in other regards that even Red and Green feel like a more enjoyable single-player experience. I would seriously prefer to play any game pre-Gen V just so I don't have to deal with the bullshit of traversing Alola and its 9000 roadblocks and cutscenes.
