Generation is just an easier way to classify the games because using numbered installments would be confusing with all the versions and having them numbered makes it hard for new audiences to pick up because they might feel like they're missing out.

Last time I checked the site has been forgetting its horror roots in favor of surrealism, though that was about a year or so ago I think. Also, thinly veiled political shit and radicals worming their way into prominent or staff positions.
When there was an attempt to censor SCP-231 due to the rape implications I knew the site was going downhill for real.

I used to like SCP, but lately they try too hard to create a coherent "universe" with all those objects, try to link them together. They also invented some super-villain organizations to oppose SCP because apparently it wasn't thrilling enough just to fight monsters and paranormal creatures. The project now feel less like a "horror" and more like a "superhero movie".
