Gen 6 had potential. The problem was Gamefreak failed to realize that potential. Alot of the base elements, like online, region diversity, lore and gameplay refinements were there. They just failed to realize most of them, and did the bare minimum.

How well the story in the previous generation was wrapped up has literally nothing to do with how good the next one is. The Zygarde sidequest was a bit strange to see in Alola, but I can't believe people on this board will say it's a real missed opportunity that a plotline or game mechanic was used in a brand new game rather than asking me to trudge back through the same region I just did a second time for scraps of new stuff.

Kanto starters got mega evolutions because gen 1 starters are popular. Charizard got two because he's the most popular among them, and they wanted to promote version exclusive forms. Hoenn starters got mega evolutions because they got remakes. Greninja got a special form because he's popular and marketable. There is no reason, from a marketing perspective, to give mega evolutions to the Johto, Sinnoh, or Unova starters right now. Kalos starters didn't get mega evolutions because the initial idea was to use mega evolution to revitalize and push older Pokemon alongside new ones. The new ones don't need that push because they're already new. Diancie didn't get a mega evolution until ORAS.

Gamefreak does this ALL THE TIME. They have the potential with their concepts and ideas, but then fail to realize them by either taking it the wrong way, or doing the bare minimum. It's sad really.
