There are technically three types of legendaries that are divided into two official groups: legendaries, sub-legendaries and mythicals.

Legendaries are run of the mill legendaries, are listed with yellow dex backgrounds and are banned in battle facilities.
Sub-legendaries fall under the same umbrella term as legendaries. The only reason they're in a different internal group is that they're legal in battle facilities. These guys have green dex backgrounds.
Mythicals are event-exclusive legendaries. Like the usual legendaries, they have yellow dex backgrounds and are banned from battle facilities.

Type: Null, Silvally, the tapu and UBs are sub-legendaries, Necrozma and the Cosmog family are normal legendaries, and Magearna and Marshadow are mythicals.
