Like all the current new SM characters like Mallow, Lana, Kiawe, Lillie, etc. all look fine. I doubt they would look much different in the old story. But between Ash's design and Misty/Brock's new design, every time they bring an old character back they look like shit.
It doesn't make sense because it's all the same style.

Because they changed the drawing style in SM to look more like sugi artwork of today. That's why old characters look different, try comparing gen 1 artwork to gen 7 artwork, there's a difference
