Croagunk is perfect for a mascot and protagonist companion. Besides having a great and appealing design, it can be anything the situation needs it to be, like a bro, a jerk, badass, pragmatic, brave, coward, cute, ugly, funny, creepy, etc.
It already is a mascot of a town from the gen it debuted in, and back in the day Croagunk was everywhere in the anime and games, even if it did nothing, just to have his face around.
