Gen 7, or at least S/M is basically it.

Both are based on Hawaii/the Polynesian Islands and have alternate formes of Kanto Pokémon.

After failing at redoing Gen 1 in Gen 5 and then somewhat successfully re-doing Gen 1 in Gen 6, instead of going to Gen 2 they went to season 2 of the anime for ideas for Gen 7.

The anime was only originally meant to last for 80 episodes and 1 movie.

But they had to continue due to Pokemon's success, so Orange Islands was created as a filler arc until Gen 2 was released.
