Hey guys,
I have always played the games casually for as long as I can remember. I started with Yellow and it all went on from there. I have never considered competitive battling until now due to my inability to get far in the Battle Tree. Any tips or pointers?
If you link your game to your Pokémon GL account you can scan a QR "Rental" team into your game to use in the Battle Tree.
If you want to get into competitive in general, Showdown Random Battles / some Smogon guides are the way to go
I would hold off on building your own team until you have some experience with playing competitively. You'll just get bored and give up unless you've already tried the fun part.

Thanks. I'll try that.

The building part IS the fun part.

I spent about a week attempting to build a team with perfect IVs but I couldn't even come close so I did actually start to get bored. He has a point.

My only advice is to test teams in Showdown before breeding them, or injecting them/getting someone to inject them for you.
Also, read.

I enjoy it too, it's something to do on long commutes, but I can't imagine running in circles in a field to be appealing to new players.

I must confess it is mostly my childish urge to relive the moment when I beat Red on Mt Silver. I wish to be better for that purpose alone.
