SM anime confuses the shit out of me, I keep thinking that it takes place in an AU because everything about the show is drastically different from the previous seasons. But in one of the first episodes, Ash makes reference to his Tauros which was a weird reference at that.
But now Misty and Brock are coming back too, so I don't even know how the writing is going to reflect on this. Will it be a nostalgia run? Are characters going to make reference to the fact that Ash is NOW in school?

Why even do this kind of reference after Iris was skipped over in XY and Serena has yet to be referenced? Are they breaking the homage/ pattern because of the reaction to XY's ending? Or SM's lackluster?

Continuity of the anime got screwy after DP.

The original series, AG and DP all felt like one long continuous series. After that they started treating each saga more standalone and drastically changing Ash's personality from one to the next.

You know right after the movie was announced I thought I was wrong; that I have mistakenly predicted something that would never happen that being Misty and Brock returning for the 20th anniversary.

BW's weird, with Dawn and Charizard coming back. But I'd like to figure that some form of continuity still exists. Even in XY Ash recognizes mons like Piplup and even Arceus.

DP actually had a lot more continuity in random episodes. They referenced Jessie's Blissey ep in Johto, they brought back Jessiebell, they referenced and brought back Ash's old pokemon, Misty got a reference with the lure, May and Gary came back, Butch/Cassidy appeared, etc.

It was after DP ended that they started closing off continuity and stopped referencing older episodes. Probably because after 13 years the writers probably figured most of the original fanbase was too old for the anime.

Pokemon doesn't have a typical continuity as story-focused series have, but doesn't entirely have a non-continuity like most episodic series. Back when DP first started in the early episodes I remember being pissed that neither Ash/Brock mentioned to Dawn that they traveled with a coordinator directly before her. I thought it was weird as hell that May got no reference in early DP. As time progressed it didn't matter because she got her cameo, but it sure was jarring.

Ash/Brock go from one episode traveling with May, to two episodes later traveling with Dawn, and neither of them think it's a coincidence that they started traveling with a new girl with the same goal as the previous?

I don't get it, why do the new SM characters look fine in the new art style, but all the old characters look like shit? It really doesn't make much sense. Mallow, Lana, Kiawe, etc. probably wouldn't look much different if they were done in XY style. But all the old characters like Ash/Misty/Brock, etc. look terrible.
