Not to mention they were nerfed to be as strong as a Life Orb boost on your attack.

The only reason to still use the Gems are:
-If your abilities are Unburden and Magician
-Item boosted full power Acrobatics

They're worthless otherwise.

I once made a gimmick team with a special Rhyperior alongside Discharge Thundurus-T and somehow managed to get to 1500 on Showdown's VGC 2015 ladder with it.

Which was an arbitrary nerf just so GF could shill their shitty Z-moves later on and not have them overshadowed by gems, a 1 time 50% boost to a specific move that uses up an item slot is not broken at all.

It is in VGC, which is why Game Freak nerfed them and removed all gems except Normal.

I honestly think that they thought of z moves and gen 7 around that time, with the strange souvenir being in Kalos and all. Z-moves seem to replace the gems, with them being similar and all.

A good compromise would be to make the type boosting items boost a little more since I don't think they're commonly used.
