Just box the starter. There's plenty of good grass/water/fire mons on the first two islands.

Alola Marowak, Salazzle, Tsareena, Wishiwashi, Araquanid, Toxapex... All solid mons to use in game and they're available in 2nd island.

You mean shiinotic? Ive not tried it out yet but it learns a move that heals shiinotic by lowering the opponents attack stat. Really awesome stuff. And it evolves really early at level 24 and learns giga drain soon too. You can catch it early too during the water trial. Stats are decent.

Depending on whether you want to use a lot of new Pokémon or not you can do this.

Every Trail catch the number of Pokémon that = that island number + number of trials that have been completed on that island.
When you beat a trial retire those Pokémon and catch new ones in the leadup to the next trial.
For each grand trial use the same a number of Pokémon as the Kahuna.
When reach the E4 make a team of 6 the retired Pokémon to go through it.

It'll be:
Gumshoos: 1 Pokémon level 12 or below
Hala: 3 Pokémon level 14 or below
Wishiwashi: 2 Pokémon level 20 or below
Salazzle: 3 Pokémon level 22 or below
Lurantis: 4 Pokémon level 24 or below
Olivia: 3 Pokémon level 27 or below.
Etc.
It made Moon really fun for me.
If you don't wanna do that then you should Nuzlock or run with a team per island and choose an E4 team at the end.
