Fully animated battle sprites. Too bad ROM hacks can't do this. :)

No goalposts were moved, ROM hacking fag. I said animated sprites can't be implemented into ROM hacks. And now you're proving that they can't be implemented and instead you can only just use what's already in the game. Seeing BW sprites carbon copied because ROM hacking is shitty and limited isn't seeing MORE of something. It's seeing the same old shit over and over. Not sure. From the changelogs, it looks like they've just been doing mostly bugfixes and occasionally changing up moves and simple mechanics. However, having cracked open Prism in crowdmap, I saw that Faraway Island was planned. And since games like Polished Crystal and even Red++ have included that, I don't see why they can't finish it.

>>33375945
If you're interested in Gen 2 mainly for its aesthetics then you definitely want to go with ROMhacking. "GS Essentials" is pure shit and doesn't follow the aesthetic limitations of the Game Boy hardware at all. It's on par with those """retro""" indie games with no rhyme or reason to what style they want, except those can still sometimes look good on their own like Shovel Knight.
>>
>>33377222
Essentials won't give me a good idea and I don't like how it emulates the newer games, I'd rather stick to Gen 3, there's a lot you can do to make it feel comfier.

I don't know if this goes here but it seems the moat decent place to ask. I'm planning on buying a powersave, so I wanted to ask, which version is the best?
>>
I'm playing Glazed and the levels seem like bullshit to me. The highest level you can find in the wild before the island after the first gym is ~10 and there are trainers with Pokemon like a level 20 Floatzel and a Gible with Dragon Rage. Am I missing something?
>>
>>33381068

Why would you buy a powersave? 3DS can be CFW'd and then you can extract and edit your saves, all for free
>>
>>33381554
No. Glazed has horrible distribution. The distribution and abundance of overleveled enemies makes me feel like I'm playing Snakewood. But much like Snakewood, I'm tempted to give myself a decent team of six so I can actually beat it

Quick question about AdvanceMap and Leafgreen
>obligatory "new to rom hacking"
I'm trying to use AM to add wild pokemon to a section of the cave in Navel Rock
After I'm done I click the save button on the top left. When I try moving on to another section of Navel Rock I get a prompt asking me to "Save wild Pokemon data?" and I click "Yes"
When I go back to the section I was working on, as it turns out, the wild pokemon data I added wasn't actually saved
I understand the basics of this program but I'm pretty stumped as to why this happens. Anyone know what I could do to fix this?
I get the same results for both Leafgreen versions 1.0 and 1.1

>>
>>33383283

>Pokemon Uranium
>Pokemon Spectrum Demo
>Pokemon Zeta/Omicron
>Pokemon Legends of the Arena Demo

There's also a bunch of mini essentials games (completed, short playtime) done for the relic castle game jam. I think there's been 2 of those events so I'd probably just play the ones that won since they'd probably be pretty solid. I played Pokemon Pantheon from the game jam, which was pretty fun despite the graphics not being great.

Also I realize half of these are demos, but they're fun and worth playing.

What's the best crystal disassembly base to use for making a new region? I see the vanilla one, TPPcrystal, and even games like Orange (since it already replaced the gear with a town map) hosted on github. But I'm not sure of the standards of using someone's disassembly game files to make another one (i.e., using Orange). Is it bad form?
>>
>>33390478
If they have public source code, it's implicitly okay to build off that. We're all doing the same thing with the years of work put into pokecrystal (by both Game Freak and the disassembly team).
>>
>>33390478
I would suggest Orange for a new region, as long as you don't care about the features it's removed (Pokégear, Battle Tower, GB Printer support, animated sprites, the two-page eight-badge Trainer Card... although those last two should be pretty easy to add back in). The code already has bugfixes for Crystal's various bugs, it has optimizations to save space, you can use 240 tiles and 256 metatiles per tileset, and it'll be easier to remove its few maps than all the ones that are in pokecrystal.

been thinking of making a romhack/essentials game for a while

>takes place in post apocalyptic johto/kanto
>a virus that infects people with deoxys genomes has ransacked the region
>protagonist is holed up with a bunch of survivors in a town
>doesn't have the traditional "beat the pokemon league" story
>gym badges acquired in an unorthodox way
>main plot is to find out the origin of the virus and taking care of it

only problem is how would I stretch the game to make it atleast medium length. Since it's basically a post apocalyptic region things like gym leaders or trainers would be uncommon

You need to put bosses in, which could be anything from wasteland gangs to feral pokemons, like SM did. Basically stuff that is not just gym badges.
>>
>>33395144
Do you have to lengthen it? You know there is a lot of potential for a shorter game that wraps things up in a nice way.

I'm not too knowledgeable about this but you can create a new section and just put the type chart in there, I'm not sure if it'll fit but I assume the chart by itself doesn't take up 100% of that section's space.
>>
>>33399379
Well, I was thinking about it, and since the engine can only have like 255 pokemon, and I know prism had to replace pokemon to get them to fit. Which pokemon did spiritomb replace?

Compare what you're doing with the file in polished crystal's code, because I know they added the fairy type somehow. I would imagine it's the same principle, no?
>>
>>33400396
Tried to put just the type chart in it's own section and it makes the game crash when you select a move during battle

I'm assuming there are things calling on the type_matchup.asm and when it's stored within a different bank the rom gets confused

>>33400926
The hack I'm working on also has Fairy type. It's actually a hack of TTPAC (didn't change anything, just added more detail like custom menu sprites for every mon, added a couple new mons, trainers, made more items accessible, etc). It's a matter of adding more resistances to existing types. But adding too many takes up too much space.

Been working on a rom hack for Crystal where everything takes place at a medieval setting. Main plot is you get drafted into fighting a war. Gym leaders are replaced with faction lords and the gyms have become huge dungeons similar to the battle pyramid in emerald. Hms are replaced entirely, by making the main character do all the work since he is a warrior.
>>
>>33416480
Sounds BL edgy. Depends on how you plan on interpreting "war" in Pokémon.
>>
>>33416521
It is edgy but I felt like for that setting, it makes sense. Pokemon are treated like tools by everyone since the main objective is to command and conquer. Some pokemon are unfortunately killed and used as armor or weapons in this game's lore.

>>33416621
Meh, it's not really the killing part; that's been a thing in Pokémon since 1. And SM threw away all euphemisms when it flat out said, "Yeah, he died in a car crash."

but apparently to you, they're the same thing

hmmmm it's almost as if essentials games are the only ones that get popular enough to justify a tvtropes page to begin with. I wonder why that is.
>>
So this is a longshot, but a while ago I posted about a problem I was having in pokecrystal.
>>32734328
Anyway, I was told to post a solution if I ever figured out what was causing the problem. Well, I just fixed it.

If anyone wants to know, what I did was add:

xor a
ld [Danger], a

at the end of ".asm_e833c" in "audio/engine.asm"

What was the problem you were having
It's hard to tell what you were even working on just based off your posted script
>>
>>33418089
Did the post I linked not show up? I was trying to get the script used in Polished Crystal that makes the danger beep stop after playing 4 times to work. When I put got it working, the music channel that was muted for the beeps didn't start playing again.
>>
>>33418109
Your post link isn't working. Probably gone
>>
>>33418117
Weird. I'll copy-paste it.

So I'm trying to make it so that the low health sound only plays a few times and then stops like in the newer games. I looked at the code for Polished Crystal as I know that hack does the same thing. I copied the code into my "audio/engine.asm" file, and it works. Mostly.

Now I'm getting a problem that when the sound stops playing, Channel 1 doesn't start playing the song's notes again. After my Pokemon faints, the music changes back to normal. The same thing happens when I run away. Any idea what's causing the issue?

Here's a video of the problem:

I'm sorry anon. I'm not sure how to help. I usually just fumble around with asm until I start picking up on context clues. If you figure it out, you should post your solution.

I'd like the concept of post game to come back into the games...

I have a question for the people that make hack for other people. what is your motivation? What do you get out of this?

A few years ago I remember receiving a 6 IV ditto and the line was insane, the ammount of work that team had to go through was insane because the pokebank wasn't around... That ditto has been a great help and I'm grateful for the people that went through the trouble of making it for us. although they must not be around anymore T>T

If I wanted to make a Yume Nikki-esque surreal Pokemon game with lots of custom assets, should I try modding a Gen 3 game or should I try Pokemon Essentials?
>>
>>33418494
emerald is the only game with a significant post-game compared to bw/xy/sumo

kanto is not gen ii's. it doesn't count as a post game if it's like a quarter to a third of the entire game.
>>

>>33417708
Maybe the edginess has nothing to do with what the game is made with, and more by who the game is being made by, i.e. someone who would make a Pokemon fangame.
>>
>>33418597
Emerald was a master piece, I wish the battle frontier would come back.

feel free to use in any of your games

Seems just fine as long as you include many dungeons. You can actually take this to its logical extreme and make a game with only 1 city and still have a good region if you make the route dense enough.

seriously doe new update when

I like your idea, anon. I'd love to see what you have so far.
>>33417633
I don't think a war is an inherently edgy topic, certainly no more than organized crime. If you try to make it all ~gritty and mature~ rather than like a heroic saga type of thing that's I think when it becomes edgy.

Should I use Prism as a base because I want the 60fps and animated sprites? But polished crystal has natures and abilities.
>>
>>33419506
Prism has abilities. Just fuck it to natures. They cause spergs to waste time on an extra 10% to their Pokemon's attack
>>
>>33418744
Pretty sure these wouldn't be able to be used at all.
The limit for GB/GBC Pokemon sprites is black, white, and two colors.
The entire Rowlet line breaks that limit, as well as Incineroar and Primarina.
