OP, you're completely wrong. It actually goes by console and not generation. Right now, we're in the 3DS era and looking back fondly on the DS era. That's why you never see anyone defending gen 6 unless they're trying to emphasize how much they hate gen 7.

Basically, people always existed that both liked and disliked XY. I'm a fervent believer in the idea that you have more motivation to post a comment or make a thread complaining about something rather than praising something, since resentment is strong fuel. Even if people did like it, their sentiments were outweighed by people who disliked the games at the time. When the focus shifts away to something else (Gen 7), people divert their complaining energies to Gen 7, meanwhile the lack of complaining about Gen 6 allows people to consolidate a more relaxed view of it, or reaffirm their original positive outlook toward it.

It's kinda in the same vein as a suspenseful horror movie. In the moment, you think one way about it (nervous, edge of your seat, afraid of a jump scare) but afterward you think it wasn't scary at all.

The best method of determining the games' reception would be to look at reviews for X and Y since release (anonymous or not) and also establish a baseline for each reviewer to determine what their expectation of average is.

Pearl & Diamond had loads of problems and Plaitnum pretty much fixed many of them. Major issue being how most new Pokemon were only acquired through post-endgame which was absolute bullshit.
