If you play VGC:

Trace is too situational and often helps the player instead of you by resetting their weather or stuff like that.
Meanwhile download can really help for chip damage.

In other words, are you a gambling addict and don't care about winning? Trace.
Do you want to win more than having fun copying random shit? Download.
