I actually prefer these designs to the last ones. Perhaps the art could've been better, though, but I guess the older versions were probably a bit too "stiff looking." These new, dynamic ones are more vibrant and eyecatching, imo. I will NEVER be a fan of the chipmunk teeth.

Nate's design was worse than Rosa's but Rosa's sprite model looked horrible to me while Nate's was okay, and that was what really mattered because you'll see that 99% of the time. I agree for HGSS but Ethan wasn't that great. And I didn't really like anything of SM Chicken's customization and something about the model seemed off to me, while for Sun the options were extremely limited but I was able to work with it. The art for both of these are dog shit but in-game they might be better, even though I'm not sure I like the direction that the new Sun is going with clothes, but customization could potentially fix non-Chicken Chicken, plus from what we saw from the Photo feature she looks okay in the game.

They're dynamic poses. That has nothing to do with the design. And why the fuck are you complaining about the pose? It's not like your in-game idle animation is going to look like this.

Also, I can't stress enough how boring the last default male MC design was. That striped blue T-shirt was boring as hell, his hair was straight and unstylish, his backpack was mostly featureless, and the solid grey shorts and hat didn't liven up the design much.

I love the new MC's designs. They both reflect the environment very well, both adorned in lightweight, colorful clothes. The girl is a good design in her own right, arguably better than the previous. The color change from the first's yellow to the new orange really makes the design pop, especially given the contrast in the low saturation of her dark hair and high saturation of her clothes. The green of the leaves on her hat is reflected on her sandals. No part of the design goes uncomplimented. I especially appreciate the braids coming down over the shoulders to fill up a spot that is otherwise empty in the design.

As for the male, I have almost the exact same things to say. Very pleased with the use of color. The red in the hat is reflected in the trim, to mix up the color scheme just enough to make it stand out. The cool blue tones vary between the shirt and the shorts, and the shorts even band out the blue to spread out the color some, but not to oversaturate it. The black in the hair and undershorts do wonders in darkening the design to keep it feeling nice and cool with the color choice.

Both wear wide brimmed hats to keep the sun out of their eyes, and both are excited to explore paradise.

It's a dinamic pose, yes, but it is also a quite stupid one.
The stand of a character in an official artwork packs with it quite a punch on the first impression of that design AND on marketing- and Sun's is just plain weird. Its he even jumping anyway? his back feet is slightly bented as if touching the ground. And if he was jumping that wide spread would only unbalance him while so, his shirt would also be too straight down, with not a single wrinkle, then Female MC's already fails by making the shaggy shirt too whide and rigid, as if it were a baloon filled with water rather than fabric.

My point being- Both MC's designs are great and convey perfectly that tourist - vibe, the use of colour is great and well balanced with the mixture of cold & warm tones in each one of them, contrast colours nicely chosen, same with the hues, luminosity and saturation of said hues-.
But even if the pose is obviously not the one we will see in the game, it IS important to make a good choice when presenting them.
I am sure there were better thumbnails for the guy's stand - so my best bet is that they chose the one with the most distinguishable silhouette, which is another of the most common techniques while working on character design.

Don't be so quick to call yourself an artist, anon. The poses are fine. Even if the male MC's back foot was on the ground, it's more than apparent that he's on the up cycle of the jump, while female is on the down cycle. The girl's blouse being filled with air is still valid from an artistic standpoint, and wrinkles in clothing generally aren't drawn in this iteration of Sugimori's art style. And yeah, duh, the poses aren't practical from a real life jumping point of view, but they're very effective and cartoonish in the portrayal of a jump. It's highly dramatized, and, again, dynamic. That's the entire point of this pose. Dynamics. Nothing else. Really wanting to sell the idea of "this version is even better" through the visual of extremely active MC's.
