We legitimately have no idea yet. There appear to be things that are the same but there are also things that are definitely changed, like where you initially get the starters, but at the same time even Platinum changed that. The only thing they've shown us so far is the 1 minute trailer today, and the cutscenes for the legendaries with Necrozma armor on them.

It's probably a better idea to wait and see if they're super different from SM before getting just US or UM, but they might be completely different after all. I doubt it, though.

In Japan Blue was the "third" version which was just the international version which fixed heaps of shit in their half finished Japanese game, while Yellow was a unique special edition

And then BW2 were new games altogether. So it's quite possible that this will be very different that SM while still effectively being the same base game. People always criticise the series for being the same game all the time, but GF do improve at this each generation.

IIRC nobody really hated DP all that much until after Platinum came out. The only gripe most people had with it were the lack of fire types in the Sinnoh dex.
