I wouldn't call it the worst, but in retrospect, it was a pretty shit feature. When it came out, I liked it. If I were to play HGSS now, I think I would find it more of nuisance than anything.

For one, it doesn't really add much. Not even much in way of "bonding". There's hardly any interaction. A single Pokemon is just following you. In this regard, even the Pikachu from Yellow was better, as it displayed a varying degree of emotions as you interacted with it. In HGSS, you get a line of text and that's it. That's boring. At the time of release, that was the best we had, so I liked it. But now, with so many better ways to interact with your Pokemon existing, that seems just pointless and shitty. That's not even mentioning how immersion breaking some of the Pokemon can be. From birds that just walk, to fishes that FLY, adding in the scaled down size, and it becomes the perfect way to break immersion. This would be even worse in 3D.

Considering the amount of time it likely took to make walking sprites of each Pokemon, and the end result we got with that, I'd put it in a bad feature category. I'd say, quite literally, every other game in franchise handle interaction and "following" Pokemon better than HGSS did.

This is multi-faceted bait, as following Pokemon was great AND they didn't bring it back at all, anyone who watched the trailer and got that from it are legitimately braindead.

I personally don't really care whether or not following Pokemon come back, but if they do, I really hope there's an option to enter Refresh by turning and interacting with your Pokemon. You could keep the whole "[Pokemon] seems to be enjoying the fresh air!" sort of messages from HGSS, just follow it up with "Would you like to play with [Pokemon]?"

An option to not have something follow you would also be nice.

That's a battle. In battle, moves like Surf and Leaf Storm literally summon water and leafs. Every attack animation shows something outlandish, considering each Pokemon can't have their own unique animations. For example, using a move like Follow Me will summon a human hand, moves like Substitute summon dolls that somehow protect you, and moves like dive can work on land, while dig works on water. And none of this ever hurts the humans standing right besides the Pokemon.

The thing for me is, battles have never been about making sense. They've been about fun, and that they continue to be. The only thing they need for immersion is better graphics and more intractability, by giving you more things to do in a battle than just choosing a move. In overworld, gameplay like that takes a back seat, and you're just exploring, taking in new sights. That requires immersion a lot more than battles.

Because brainlets like to think game development is as simple as "if you don't include x feature, y part of the game will be better instead". So if you don't have walking Pokemon some other aspect of the game will instantly become godly. Well, that's just the only way I can see it making sense. I find things "fun or not fun" first and in most cases, just leave it at that. But in this case, I needed to explain why I thought differently, and that is the only reason I can see explaining my different feelings towards the same problem.

In a battle, I care more about gameplay than making sense, as Pokemon battles never truly made sense to begin with. Outside of a battle, you don't have much gameplay to put your thought into, so minor things can easily beak the immersion. That's the best explanation I can provide for my own feelings. If it's not this, I literally cannot explain why I care about it on the overworld, but not in the battles.
