I really love cozy retro backgrounds but digital art can be pretty great too, Pokemon Best Wishes had the worst pokemon art overall so I don't think that cherrypicking is really fair.
Old anime had more muted colors and it's true that the saturation is stronger lately even if I don't see it as a flaw, so maybe just turn it lower manually for that retro vibe? (pic related, also has a bit of grain).

I don't even watch the anime and even I think that shit is oversaturated. On top of that, the composition of each background is terrible.

Not that I agree with the shit arguments in this thread, but Sinnoh/Unova/Kalos had for the most part fucking awful color design. Most scenes were poorly balanced including that Team Rocket screenshot.

It's like they tried making Kenji Nakamura anime and failed. Look at Gatchaman Crows or Tsuritama.

Sun & Moon has one of my favorite color design lately.

I understand the appeal of old anime colors, but this wash down was the result of the procesing and was extremely frustrating to animators, and color designer job was severly limited by the tools of those times. Actual animation cels which had the intended colors were very bright.

BD technology now allows old anime to look as it was intended. I wish they would release old Pokemon in BD.
