In all honesty, Aaron isn't that great a player.
Obviously he's a serious player who's won a lot of smaller tournaments and played consistently enough to qualify for worlds most years, but most of his achievement is because of the fact he is good at streaming, and generally has a good presenting style. At worlds, they usually have one on the main stage and two more on backup streams. I *think* that they go to one of the backup streams if they go into a third game after the main stream game has been totally concluded, however that's quite a rare occurrence.

Usually in a VGC tournament round, 90% of games conclude after 30-40 minutes, but it's just those last few games dragging on for the rest of the time. If there's one game on the floor that has ended with Celesteela vs Celesteela, there's no way to force that onto screen.

That's not actually true. In Gen VI, you could literally inject ANY Pokémon from PokéGen just through the 3DS's web browser, without any installing mods.

Homebrew on 3DS may now be easier, but you do have to have homebrew to inject now, which practically means you need two 3DSs if you want to do tournaments seriously.

Final Gambit is a move I'm always surprised never got further. I've seen a lot of players top cut tournaments with it, quite consistently every year, but it never seems to have won anything big.

I personally like VGC, but from an objective standpoint, Smogon OU is not well-designed for tournament play; it's a very slow and defensive metagame, often exceeding 30 turns, which on-cartridge would last over an hour.
VGC may promote luck, but it also intentionally promotes offensive play, which makes games end within a somewhat reasonable time frame. Pokémon is inherently a very slow game, and if people had to watch a stall game in real time, they WOULD give up.

Intimidate helps too.
Steel STABs kill fairies and Ice-types for Mence. Mence spams Dragon Pulse and Flamethrower to hit opposing Garchomp and Steel-types for Metagross.

The main this is Bulldoze Salamence sets off Weakness Policy on Metagross, which massively powers up its offensive power while also dealing chip damage to opponents.
Intimidate offers big support to Metagross, while also Bulldoze also threatens the fire-types that are obviously a big threat to Metagross.

The only problem is Metagross now being outsped and being in the 2HKO range of most of the metagame, but that still leaves yourself vulnerable to the opponent's other Pokémon.
