You can find various 3DS models on the cheap these days, so i'd say so.
More so if you can find them on firmware under 11.3 because you can just pirate any game you want.

I did pretty much exactly what you're contemplating, just a few months ago. Bought a 2ds on craigslist for $50 before SM came out, bought Sun, and later bought X to play through because I had never played it and Sun was kind of unsatisfying.
I would say its not really worth it, they aren't really fun games, but if you're seriously itching to play some pokemon idk its not that expensive, especially because you can probably get SM used for cheaper than I got it for.
Still, the games are a lot of unnecessary handholding that I could of done without. You might want to just emulate something else idk.

Only if you can hack it and get the games you want for free, then it's the best gaming device you'll own for some time, insane value.
If you have the cash you can moralfag and get all the games instead, but the fact that you are even asking if something so cheap is worth it tells me you aren't exactly shitting cash, so yeah it's a great purchase that will keep you busy if you can hack it.
