Yeah exactly, obviously from a pure game standpoint the stats stay static but in the anime it's living breathing world so maybe Ash didn't get enough sleep last night or Pikachu's hungry or whatever.

I've noticed that they usually write around it though by having Pikachu visibly struggle with an opponent, then the battle's interrupted. A few episodes later he recoups the loss so it's like "oh yeah he would have won anyway" but they get to keep the drama and hype up some new mon, usually a starter.

Another thing they could do is split the episode count. Have Ash and Pikachu show and then have the game protagonist show. With the two meeting at the end in the Pokemon league.
