Gen 8 is going to play it safe. It will be the usual formula. Eight gyms, Elite Four, Team Whatever threatens the world. It's the best approach for moving the series to its biggest console upgrade.

One thing I am betting on is it will have over 100 new Pokemon. Why? Easy, you need as much incentive as you can get to pump up sales for a $300 console.

I do think that Gen 8 is going to place all the online systems in a Global Terminal. It's going to be the first Switch game. Nothing complicated like Festival Plaza. The X2 is still not finalized, isn't being used in commercial products, and probably costs a shit ton to boot. Going with a custom X1 was a wise decision if they didn't want to release a console with double the price a year later.

Casuals are eating up the Switch right now, way more than they ever did with 3DS
They're buying them at jacked up prices of minimum 400$ and that shit is still sold out everywhere, I don't think they need much more incentive to sell the thing.

Only thing I'd add is that I expect Nintendo to release a cheaper, joyconless, possibly portable only Switch SKU ala 2DS when Pokemon launches in 2019, to target the kids specifically.

In function it's just a glorified WiiU tablet and between the battery life in any game worth playing, the fragile design creaking in my hands when I play it, and it's inability to fit in a pocket/a bag that Im carrying other things in this...not really a handheld at all?

Honestly? I don't put my Switch in a bag or anything. I bought one of those cases with a handle, the blue Sheikah Eye one. I just put it in there and carry it around by the handle.
I've never encountered battery life as a substantial problem, but if it drops below 50% I just charge it while playing.
I'm surprised to hear that yours creaks in your hands. If that's not an exaggeration, you may want to look into that, but perhaps I just don't use mine in handheld as often as you do, since you said you never dock yours.
Before I got a case I put the Joy-cons in one pocket and the Switch itself in the other. Not as convenient as a DS, but it fit.

There is a noticeable difference between 30 frames and 60 frames in every application. 60fps pokemon would be so crisp and smooth you'd shit yourself. Gen 6 and 7 are so poorly optimized for the 3DS that I question if I even get 24 most of the time, not to mention the horrendous drop during double battles.

I guess I shouldn't assume this represents everyone's experience, but my main Pokemon rival/companion growing up was my brother. But I can't imagine many families shelling out for two switches so siblings can play together.

The clamshell design was only ever good on the GBA SP and the DSi/DSi XL. Every other iteration of it had major flaws.

DS/DS Lite had shit hinges that broke easily under regular usage conditions and the 3DS/3DSXL scratch their own screens over time because the bezel of the bottom screen presses against the top one over time. This has been reported to happen on the N3DS/N3DS XL too.

Seriously, I'm all for the clamshell but their history with them is spotty as fuck.
