While it's not that simple, pokemon do have something called EVs. We'll take Servine for example, Servine has 2 Speed Effort Value points so every time you kill one you get those. Hawlucha has 2 attack points, etc. The pokemon you fight and what EVs they yield do effect the way your pokemon grow
