Actually, this saga's settings made this sort of concept necessary. Ash eventually had to compete against mega evolution users with his own gen 6 powerhouse, and the only gen 6 related M-evolved mon the games have is M-Diancie. Blame GF for not introducing M-evolved forms to the Kalos starters\other non legendary gen 6 mons. Besides, I enjoyed to watch Ash Greninja's scenes in the XY&Z part, in terms of animation and action. I do agree that the concept had some flaws (mostly, design issues) , but I wouldn't call it retarded, overall it added nice atmosphere to the series.
