They're not, while I would love to see a company give GF a run for their money, they're like disney of japan. Pokemon is too huge and too world changing to anybody outside to rival pokemon. It would have to come from the inside like a personal kickstarter within GF's company

The only thing that's gonna stop Azurite from topping Game Freak is that eventual Cease & Desist.

Why is the fangame and rom hacking community so big, and the franchise so huge in general, and yet we haven't seen competitors?
Game Freak is so lazy a small independent team could easily fund up a better game on Kickstarter if they had the talent and passion to do it, no need to leech off the Pokemon IP.

Harvest Moon had its Stardew Valley which was made by one fucking dude and better than the original franchise in a lot of ways, so why not Pokemon which is infinitely bigger with a more active community?
Is Pokemon THAT reliant on nostalgia that you can't sell a better game without using the IP imagery?

Pokemon has a good share of competitors. The issue is that Pokemon is still around for people to compare it to. If we were still getting new Harvest Moon games then Stardew Valley would've bombed.

Spikey Pichu couldn't even evolve, so nobody gave a damn.

With Zorua/Zoroark it was a completly different story: it effectively killed any chance the poor fox had of becoming "the next lucario". It was so bad that B2W2 onward, the family's either a free gift pokemon or just another random encounter.

Making a game from scratch is cake. If anything they're gimping themselves even more by using Essentials and not RPG Maker MV. Every game making program worth a damn now can export projects to be playable on console with ease.

All and all, Pokemon's too gargantuan for anyone other than DQM to slay in Japan, but that still doesn't consider the fact that no other Monster Catching Games can compare to Pokemon outside of Japan, it has too much of an iron grip on everything to let go so easily.
