I'm gonna use the Dusk Lycanroc as my starter because it looks so cool, but it pisses me off it's event exclusive. Also might bring over a level 5 Totodile from Gold VC

I've done it a few times. It's definitely a good way to mix things up. My only suggestions are that you shouldn't try to use any Pseudos or anything with Dragon Rage unless you just want to rape the first 3 badges/trails.

Do we know if you get it as a Lycanorc or as a Rockruff that evolves into it? I feel like to be a starter you need to get it in the base form

I played through sun with an alolan vulpix. A friend made an egg for me and I boxed my starter as soon as I got the vulpix to level 4 or so.

I use a Shinx as my starter in D/P/Pt

It's pretty good, but you gotta plan around it for stuff like Roark and Gardenia. I usually get a Machop(which I replace with a Meditite later) and a Vespiquen to cover those. It's kind of fun, actually.
