Here's what I do for in-game stuff
>Starter
>Early route Pokémon
>Third Pokémon between the 4th and 5th gym. After the 3rd gym if I'm feeling extra frisky
>Late-game Pokémon that I've waited for forever to get
>Decent Pokémon that fills the rest of my HM niche before Victory Road (or when needed)
>The strongest Pokémon in my PC (usually the box legend) as fodder during the Elite Four. Boxed immediately after its purpose is fulfilled
Also, pseudo-Team Rate Thread. About to fight the 3rd gym.

Here is my plan for first playthrough teams team
>Starter
>First route Bird
>Pseudo legend
>Last three spots usually filled by gift mons
>catch every new pokemon I can find
>train them all
>make team of six favourites at the time for important battles
>starter
>5 other things i find that i find cool
>>33251868
>Starter
>Other 5 pokemon With diferent types
>>33251868
I make my team with at least a grass, fire, water, electric, ground, and psychic type.

I just think about what pokemon are available in the game I'm playing that I think are cool and have varied typings and make sure I don't have to wait until e4 or something to get them. Most pokemon are usable for ingame playthroughs. Usually don't pick a starter if I'm replaying a game unless I really like one of the starters I didn't pick first time around.
>starter
>the first 5 pokemon that i catch
i always try to catch every pokemon on a route, but do not usually catch doubles. i don't usually switch out mons after i've filled the 6 slots on my team, unless i desperately need an hm user

this is fun but it can be time consuming
Must have the grass/fire/water trio. Likely one of them is from the set of starters. Also, I almost always prefer pokemon introduced in that generation.
I will make exceptions for pokemon that look close enough to a type.
Since XY has few grass pokemon I like until the grass/ghosts after the 6th badge, I often pick Florges as my "grass" type. Or I might use a pokemon with the red/green/blue palette as a replacement, like Aurorus as my "water" if I don't pick Greninja because the water types in XY are...
It's less about the type coverage and more able having a balanced-looking team as a protag.
Other than that, I like to have pokemon that are different main colors for the same reason. More often than not I have an electric type, a waifu, and a beastly mvp.

They go to smogon and blindly copy what's there or they copy the latest champion's team
