Bulbasaur has advantage over Brock, Misty, Giovani, Loreli and Bruno.

Squirtle has advantage over Brock, (Misty in Gen3 with Bite), Blaine, Bruno and Lance.

Charizard has advantage over Erika only (and Lance in Gen3)

The other two were tedious to play with? When I got Blue for the VC I decided to use Charmander since I'd never used it before. And it was absolutely useless. It's only usable move was Ember until 33 when it got slash. Even then it was still basically useless as a Fire type. I was able to teach it Fire Blast and Earthquake and it got better from their, but you shouldn't have to wait til gym 7 for your starter to be usefull. I didn't even bring it to the E4 because it's coverage was redundant.
Now my first game was Yellow, so I've never personally used Bulbasaur or Squirtle, but maybe they're even more tedious. But from what I've heard from other people, they're not.

I recently played blue and choose bulbausaur and it wasn't that good for someone who mostly trains his starter.

Bulbasaur line has too many weaknesses in the game (zubat, psy, ice, fly etc.) It was really a pain in the ass, still it became my most loved kanto starter

Unless your Venusaur is underleveled you should have any trouble against Loreli with the broken Razor Leaf, or Giga Drain/Frenzy Plant in Gen3. Also none of her pokemon use any offensive Psychic moves. and none of her pokemon resist Grass so you really shouldn't get any trouble.

Not sure what were you playing, but my Venusaur smashed the game alone with a super underleveled team

Zubats are annoying, yeah. Pidgey/Spearow don't use any Flying moves until halfway, by that time you have a good counter against them.

Ice don't appear until much late in the game and all of them are half-Water so it's isn't that bad.

Psychic, apart from Sabrina and Koga gyms, only the harmless Abra and Drowzee appear in the wild and they are not very common to worry about.

For me trainers with fire mons kinda fucked me or some caves and I had venusaur before 4th gymn.

Every rocket fag has zubat or jewmon, so it is annoying. Also venusaurs movepool isn't first that good. No dig or earthquake e.g.

Fire-types are shit in gen 1, you have nearly no reason to ever use one. Squirtle had the advantage of being an early-game Water-type and Bulbasaur has that instant-crit.

Did you try Body Slam with Venusaur?

it was surprisingly OP in Gen1 with Venusaur. I literally spammed it against Blue and won with that level. It also worked well against TR's mons and even Moltres.

Razor Leaf / Body Slam / Toxic / Leech Seed or Sleep Powder are more than enough to beat the game singlehandedly.

And while you are counting its counters, let's count its advantages:

Rock Tunnel, Diglett Cave, SS. Anne, Seaform Islands, Sevii Islands, Powerplant, Victory Road, fishermen route and sea routes, etc..

I'm not saying there's absolutely nothing beats Venusaur in Gen1, but its pros largely outnumber its cons.

Charizard only became shit once sneaky pebbles were introduced. In gen 1 and 3 (you know, the gens where you could choose them as starters), Charizard and Venusaur were both equally subpar.
