According to the mystery files, he was the first one to start the dubious experimentation that was going on in Aether and he was the first to obsess with UBs until he got sucked into a wormhole

Given all of this, what he did wrong was be the first to establish the bad side of Aether. Lusamine only took over his stuff after he disappeared. It is technically only "theorized" by Gladion that Mohn's disappearance was the source of Lusamine's crazy. Even Gladion, however, says that he "had to believe that in order to get through it all". We don't really know, but Lusamine was not always crazy, neither was Mohn always fat I guess.

Maybe USUM will tell us more, maybe not
