The major problem I have with the SMT line is evolutions.
I mean sure, it's cool to run around with a giant demon and stuff. But if you like a certain monster, there is no way to actually make it work.
Most monster raising games have this issue.
In pokemon, if you wanted to, you could beat the game with a team of early game shit mon.
In most other, you don't have that option. To beat the game you need to turn all your monsters into something you might not like.
Sure, you may need specific pokemon for battle tree or online, but that's optional content.

Dragon Quest Monsters actually solves the issue of not being able to use your favorites in Joker 2 Pro with X and XY Variants obtained by synthesizing two Level 20+s of the same monster to get an X, and then doing the same with Level 50+s to get an XY.
The X and XY Variants have much higher stat gains and stat caps, and might even get a new skill tree or set of resistances, immunities, traits, etc.
Not sure if they kept this feature in Terry's Wonderland, Iru and Luca's Marvelous Mysterious Key or either of the Joker 3s, though.
