I thought the only popular Villain x Protag ship was Proton x Lyra (and that's because he looks like a fuccboi which appeals to all of those otomeshits out there). Maxie and Archie don't really fall under that conventional archetype like Steven does.

That, plus RS were the first games to have a female rival in that way even if it wasn't romantic at first. Couple that along with PokeSpe's blatant ship and ORAS' more in-your-face waifu shit and it starts to build up very quickly.

A few factors I can think of-

1. Hilbert is the first male pc to be decently popular since Ethan. Largely because of his more traditional looking style compared to Brendan and Lucas.

2. They're older than previous protags

3. Hilda didn't appear in the anime, so there's no popular Ash shipping to spoil it.

These two, because I grew up with them in a way since Pokémon Blue was my first video game ever so just seeing them together makes me feel nostalgic, and also because I thought Blue being tsundere for Red in the remakes was cute. He was straight up a little shit in the original RBY though. Same thing with May and Brendan in Emerald, but he was nicer in ORAS. Still cute.
